Plexiglass or polymethyl methacrylate is a plastic material made from methyl methacrylate polymers. More transparent than glass and more or less unbreakable depending on its mixture, Plexiglas is used to manufacture safety glass, furniture and architectural objects, lighting technology, signage, automotive industry, and many other areas.
As a rule, it is very transparent, more so than glass, to the point that it possesses behavioural characteristics comparable to optical fibre in terms of transparency and with the property of being unbreakable more or less depending on its “mixture”. Because of these characteristics, it is used to manufacture safety glass and similar items, in accident prevention equipment and in furnishing and architectural objects in general.
Cast PMMA can be recycled: by distilling the production waste, the basic monomer MMA is obtained and can be polymerised again.
The following characteristics make plexiglass a material suitable for many purposes: from architecture to engineering and biomedicine:
Plexiglass is easily scratched and attracts dust. It is not suitable for uses involving mechanical wear. It also tends to yellow over time.
